  • “Nature’s essential principle is Irregularity. From the earth, the trees, fruits and flowers of all sorts to ourselves, we are all completely irregular.” - Renoir’s Grammar

As 19th century French artist Auguste Renoir points out, the phenomenon of irregularity is evident everywhere. Society of Irregulars exists simply to explore this reality in depth. All of the elements of our organization, from teaching—to supporting professional artists—to setting out with groups into nature, museums, culturally-rich centers and so on to absorb a place and take artistic notes—all of this together encapsulates our one true form. Society of Irregulars is a study of the beneficial impact of creative interaction amongst nature on individuals and how these experiences may propagate into a greater societal appreciation for that nurturing connection between human beings and our environment.

  • When we talk about nature we are referring not just to the organic but anything that holds within it an organic character. Although everything material is ultimately derived from natural elements, much of the living quality of nature is lost when things are no longer created by hand and heart fueled by our earth-born spirit. Survival in our modern world requires technology, but in the search for vivacity and meaning the most effective aides are found within nature’s close proximity. This living and breathing irregular sector of the world might be called Art. Our experiences are meant to explore these realms using painting and drawing as our vehicle. From true wilderness to a local park, from a museum to a backyard art show we only define our domain of study to that which is not entirely devoid of nature’s evidence.

  • We exist to collaborate! We want each experience to be unique, so simply propose an idea to us via the homepage form and we can start planning!

We like to work with individuals and organizations who are looking to further celebrate something uniquely organic, a beautiful evidence of irregularity. We also wish to support and shed artistic light on your greater cause. Our headquarters are mobile and we enjoy coming to you. We offer the services of guiding in various artistic practices from drawing, to watercolor, to pastel and to oil painting. We also guide in museums and historical centers. We provide all materials so participants only need to bring themselves and we are adaptable to work in any spaces, whether outside or indoors. We always travel with selections from our own artists’ collection and enjoy sharing our artwork and discussing our process to new audiences. Our art expos can act as fundraising opportunities for your given organization.

  • Society of Irregulars is an organization acting as vessel in pursuit of meaning, but our well of inspiration is drying up. Our earth is getting hotter, forests are disappearing, species are going extinct and humans are dying due to our current collective failure to prioritize the planet’s longevity instead of short-term financial gains. With each day it becomes more and more crucial to talk about how paramount it is to protect our natural reserves and encouraging new strategies of environmental rehabilitation so that future generations may continue to have at least some bit of nature to enjoy and gain inspiration from. As artists and teachers we look to give as much voice and money as we are able to groups which work to preserve and protect spaces which foster life and subsequently contribute to humanity’s continued existence.

When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe.
— John Muir

Our Featured Artists

  • That’s easy. They all have a deep love for nature and painting out amongst it.

Pauline, O’Neill and John all see the practice of painting as their primary life path, that and teaching. Each of them work in their own particular modes and locales, but they are unified in their dedication to an endless artistic study of the visible world. And sometimes they paint together.

  • Each of them have their own methods in their practice, but a common thread is that each of them see the benefit of a prolonged repeated study of the same motifs in the continually changing conditions of light, atmosphere and that of their own person.
