Big Trips

Big trips represent the extreme end of all of our experiences. As we love collaborations, Big Trips are often run through associate organizations with instruction shared amongst our ranks. While an afternoon spent exploring nature through art is sufficient to spark curiosity, our big trips are meant to provide profound discoveries.

Just like in all our experiences, nature is the real teacher, and by going deep into its domain on a Big Trip, possibilities for learnings are infinite.

Painting the Mountains led by Chulengo Expeditions

Saturday, January 9 - Saturday, January 16, 2027 (Eight days, $2950)

This Trek is operated by Chulengo Expeditions

“Join our first-ever art-oriented expedition, an outgrowth of our Visiting Artists Program! On this horse-supported wilderness trek, you’ll pair the classic elements of an expedition with Chulengo—immersion in the backcountry, coaching in outdoor skills, context in natural and human history—with artistic explorations.

We’ve designed this itinerary to offer several hours a day for drawing, painting, and art instruction with John Springer, an oil painter (and NOLS instructor) who joined us as as visiting artist in January 2026.

You need not be an artist to join! When we’ve had visiting artists join our standard expeditions, most participants end up entranced with the artistic element even when (especially when?) they don’t consider themselves artists back at home. Think of this as an invitation to develop a creative practice, and deepen your powers of observation of the natural world.”

Boundary Waters Painting Canoe Odyssey

Slated for September 2027. Based out of Ely, MN

Guided by John Springer, veteran Boundary Waters explorer.

A week of paddling through the sacred wilderness along the borders of Minnesota and Canada. We will take in the power of this threatened landscape through creative interpretation. Although painting will be the main method taught, any form of creative pursuit from writing to photography to music will be welcome to accompany the quest.
